Braces or clear aligners? For most teenagers either could work, so the real question is which one suits your child's teeth, habits and life. Here is how we help Auckland families decide.
It is one of the most common conversations in our Newmarket clinic. A parent, a teenager, and the same fair question: braces or clear aligners? Often the teen has a strong opinion, usually about how they look. The honest answer is that for many teenagers either option could straighten their teeth, so the real decision is about which one suits their case, their habits and their life. Here is how we talk it through with Auckland families.
The short version
Braces are fixed to the teeth and work around the clock, whatever else is going on in a busy teenage life. Clear aligners are nearly invisible and removable, which is exactly their strength and their weakness. Braces suit almost every case, including complex ones. Aligners suit milder cases and teens who will genuinely wear them about 22 hours a day, every day, for the whole of treatment.
Neither is "better". They are different tools, and as specialists we recommend the one that will actually finish the job well for your child's teeth.
What braces are really like for teenagers
Modern braces are smaller and more comfortable than the ones most parents remember. They are glued to the teeth, adjusted at regular visits, and they simply get on with the job. Nothing to remember, nothing to lose at school camp, no willpower required. That reliability is why braces remain our workhorse for teenagers, especially for bigger movements and bite corrections.
The trade-offs are real but manageable. Some foods are off the menu, cleaning takes more effort, and teeth can feel tender for a few days after adjustments. For teens who want something less noticeable, tooth-coloured clear braces do the same work more quietly, and our LightForce custom 3D-printed braces are designed tooth by tooth for precision and comfort.
Sport and music, the two questions parents ask most, are both fine. With a properly fitted mouthguard over braces, rugby, netball and hockey are all on. Wind and brass players usually adapt within a couple of weeks.
What clear aligners are really like for teenagers
Clear aligners are a series of thin, transparent trays, swapped every week or two, that gradually move the teeth. They are hard to spot in photos, there are no food rules because you take them out to eat, and brushing stays easy. For self-conscious teens, that can matter a great deal. You can read more on our clear aligners page.
The catch is compliance. Aligners only work while they are being worn, and that means about 22 hours a day, including school, sport and sleepovers. Out for lunch, back in after lunch, every single day, for the whole of treatment. Some teenagers are brilliant at this. Others, completely understandably, are not. Lost trays happen too, and each one costs time.
We are always straight with families about this. If we think aligners will fight your teenager's habits, we will say so before you spend a dollar, because a half-worn aligner is the most expensive kind.
Which one does a better job?
For mild to moderate crowding and spacing, both usually finish beautifully, and the choice can safely come down to lifestyle and preference. For more complex problems, bigger bite corrections, severely rotated teeth, or teeth that need significant guiding, braces are often the more predictable tool. This is exactly the kind of judgement a specialist orthodontist is trained to make, and it is why every Milk plan starts with proper diagnostic records rather than a sales pitch.
You can see the kinds of problems we treat, and how they finished, on our real before and after results page. Every photo there is a real Milk patient, shared with permission.
A quick word on Invisalign
Many parents ask for Invisalign by name, because it is the brand they know. Invisalign is one brand of clear aligner among several. We used it in the past, and these days we primarily plan our aligner treatment with Angel Aligners, which we consider excellent for the cases we accept for aligner treatment. If you were specifically searching for Invisalign in Auckland, we explain the full story here.
What about the cost?
Parents often assume aligners cost far more than braces. In reality the fees overlap heavily, because the biggest driver of cost is how complex the case is and how long it takes, not the appliance. We cover the full picture in our guide to what braces cost in NZ.
At Milk, fees are all-inclusive and quoted in writing before anything starts. Simple and cosmetic treatment starts from $7,900 and comprehensive specialist treatment from $9,900, covering records, appliances, all appointments, retainers and aftercare. Interest-free payment plans work out around $60 to $76 a week for most families, there is a family discount when siblings are treated, and we are a Southern Cross Affiliated Provider. Full details are on our prices page.
How to actually decide
Start with a free Smile Assessment. We look at your teenager's teeth, listen to what they care about, and tell you honestly which options would work, including when either would do the job and the choice is genuinely theirs. If treatment makes sense, a full diagnostic work-up with a written plan and an exact quote is $390, and there is no obligation to go further.
And if you already have a quote or a plan from elsewhere and something does not sit right, we are always happy to give a specialist second opinion.
Common questions from parents
Is my teenager too young for aligners?
Age matters less than habits and how many adult teeth are through. Once the adult teeth are in, both braces and aligners are on the table, and we will tell you plainly if one is the smarter choice for your child.
What happens if my teen does not wear their aligners enough?
Treatment stalls, teeth drift back, and the plan falls behind. If that pattern sets in, we talk honestly about switching to braces rather than letting months and money drift away. It is also why we are careful about who we recommend aligners for in the first place.
Can my teenager still play sport with braces?
Yes. With a well fitted mouthguard over the braces, contact sport is fine. We will show you exactly what to use at the fitting appointment.
Are braces or aligners faster?
Speed depends on the case, not the appliance. Most full treatments take around 18 to 24 months either way. An aligner case only stays on schedule if the trays are worn properly.
Do you need a referral to see Milk?
