– Retainers in Auckland
Retainers are what keep your teeth straight once treatment is finished. We fit and look after retainers at our Newmarket clinic, and we make replacement retainers for everyone, including people who had their braces or aligners somewhere else.
Replacement retainers for everyone. Newmarket clinic.
Need a replacement retainer?
If you have lost or broken a retainer, we can help, even if you were treated elsewhere. Book a short appointment, we take a quick digital scan, and we make you a new one. The sooner the better, as teeth can start to shift without a retainer in place.
Book a retainer appointmentFounded and led by specialist orthodontist Dr Shahrzad MacAvoy. Your treatment is always with a registered specialist orthodontist.
Types of retainers
There is no single best retainer. The right one depends on your teeth, your bite and your lifestyle, and we will talk you through it.
Clear retainers
Thin, see-through retainers that look like aligners. Discreet and comfortable, usually worn at night.
Hawley retainers
The traditional design, an acrylic plate with a wire across the front. Hard-wearing and easy to adjust.
Fixed retainers
A thin wire bonded quietly behind your front teeth. Always working, with nothing to remember to put in.
Wearing and caring for retainers
Wear them for life
Teeth never stop trying to drift. Wearing your retainer long term, usually nightly, is what holds your result.
We keep an eye on things
We see you about three months after your braces come off, then as needed, to check your teeth are stable.
Easy care
Clean with cool water and a soft brush, store it in its case, and keep it away from heat so it does not warp.
For our own patients, replacement retainers are complimentary in the first year if one breaks or wears out, and charged if it is lost. Replacements are otherwise quoted per case. See our pricing, or learn about braces and clear aligners.
Common questions about retainers
I lost or broke my retainer, can you help?
Yes. We make replacement retainers for everyone, including people who had their treatment somewhere else. Book a short appointment, we take a quick digital scan, and we make you a new retainer. Try not to go too long without one, because teeth can start to drift back.
How much is a replacement retainer?
It depends on the type of retainer and whether one or both jaws need replacing, so we quote it per case. For our own patients, replacements are complimentary in the first year if a retainer breaks or wears out, and charged if it is lost. Get in touch for a quote.
How long do I need to wear retainers?
To keep your teeth straight for the long term, plan on wearing retainers indefinitely, usually every night once things have settled. Teeth naturally try to drift, so the retainer is what holds your result in place.
What types of retainers are there?
There are clear plastic retainers that look like thin aligners, traditional Hawley retainers with a wire across the front, and fixed retainers, which are a thin wire bonded behind your front teeth. We will recommend what suits you best.
How do I look after my retainer?
Clean it gently with cool water and a soft brush, keep it in its case whenever it is out of your mouth, and keep it away from heat, which warps the plastic. Bring it to your check-ups so we can make sure it still fits well.
Do you check my retainers after my braces come off?
Yes. We see you for a check about three months after your braces come off, then as needed, to make sure your teeth are stable and your retainers are doing their job.
